Space and Light

It seems obvious that a fundamental piece of knowledge that each of us possesses is the awareness that our bodies inhabit space. And additionally that we all know where each bit of our body is in that space. Creation of space-sensation on a flat surface is surely central to painting; the history oif European painting is marked by different approaches to the problem.

Compared with other media, watercolour is sometimes regarded as secondary; it is certainly more challenging. Having previously used the medium only for occasional figurative work, the decision to meet the challenge non-depictively was made in 2020 with the first lockdown and confinement to a smaller studio. All the new work is on cold-pressed 300g/m2 paper.
